Citizens for Traffic Calming on Old Courthouse Road

Old Courthouse Road, in Vienna Virginia, is about a 2.5 mile stretch of winding, shoulderless back road with sharp turns and blind bends complicated by political boundaries which are Town of Vienna and Fairfax County.  Our community has seen a large turn over where many original owners in the 1960's are now moving and being replaced by younger families with children.  Click on Old Courthouse Road, Driver's Perspective.

We are families who live on Old Courthouse Road, Creek Crossing and surrounding streets and we are united, regardless of political boundaries, in our request to find innovative solutions to the ever increasing volume and speed of vehicles travelling our streets endangering our children, our families, our community.

The construction of the Tyson's rail will not help the community on Old Courthouse Road.  Regardless of whether the rail is above or below ground, it is in fact a "kiss and ride" which means that people will have to drive to get to the 4 stops.

Our Goals are:

  • To increase the quality of life of residents of our community;
  • To Create a safe and attractive community for residents and for drivers passing through;
  • To improve conditions for cyclists, pedestrians, children walking to school;
  • To reinforce the historical and natural settings.

Our Objectives are:

  • To slow traffic to within posted speed limits;
  • To reduce accident frequency and intensity;
  • To increase safer access to the roadway from neighborhoods;
  • To provide safer access to Westbriar Elementary School for children;
  • To enhance trails and crosswalks for cyclists, pedestrians;
  • To enhance the historic resources and natural settings;
  • To create a roadway that can accommodate existing volumes and some future growth.

In addition to the present challenges we face as a community, there are many future challenges that lie ahead.  The proposed districts in Tyson’s Corner, Old Courthouse Road is right on the border of the 2 proposed districts namely Tyson’s Central 7 and Tyson’s West.  Tyson's urban center  will add 200,000 jobs and 100,000 residents, this proposal could bring an immediate adverse impact to our community.

Tyson’s traffic choked arteries will force many to avoid additional congestion due to lane closings on Rt 7 and Rt 123, thus forcing them to use back roads like Old Courthouse Road and Creek Crossing.  With the forecast of 200,000 jobs, 100,000 new residents in the Tyson’s area, this only means increase in traffic volume through Old Courthouse Road and Creek Crossing before, during and after re-development.

More than once I have experienced aggressive drivers on Old Courthouse Road. When I'm driving I have people honking behind me, tailgating me, or worse - I had one van pass me on the left. I have started to pull over to let these people pass as a safety measure for me and my 4 children - Ilana T., Old Courthouse Road (10/14/08)  Click for more Testimonials.
